Locke, E. A. (1995). Beyond determinism and materialism, or isn’t it time we took consciousness seriously? Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, 26(3), 265–273.
BEYOND DETERMINISM AND MATERIALISM
The author launches a devastating attack on materialism, behavioralism, epiphenomenalism, psychological determinism, etc. However, he does make some errors not critical to his case. The first of which is that cognitive therapies actually do have their roots in behavioralism (see: What’s Behind the Research). Secondly, Hume did not deny causation but, rather, challenged the idea that we could know causes.
